About This Course

Accounting and finance are at the very heart of business operations. From banking to manufacturing, from service industries to micro businesses, the ability to manage, plan and account for money is the ultimate measure of business success and the key driver of growth. Many accountants occupy key managerial positions, yet few are qualified managers. In the increasingly complex modern business environment, there is high demand for skilled professionals who can work flexibly across business boundaries.

  • The objective of this qualification is to provide learners with an understanding of accounting and business in the broader business context, and to equip them with practical, industry-focused skills to manage business finances, budgets and cash flow effectively, and to play a key role in business growth.

  • The Level 4 units lay foundations in academic and research skills, the business and economic environment, quantitative methods, financial accounting, management accounting, and leading and managing teams.

  • The Level 5 units allow learners to specialise in business strategy, financial management, planning, reporting, human resource management and business start-up planning.

  • Successful completion equips learners with specialist skills and technical terminology to develop their accounting, business and management capabilities and to progress to further study or employment.

  • The qualification is Ofqual regulated and carries 240 credits with a Total Qualification Time of 2400 hours.

  • 12 mandatory units totalling 240 credits (120 at Level 4 and 120 at Level 5)

  • Each unit carries 20 credits, 100 Guided Learning Hours and 200 hours Total Qualification Time

  • Equivalent to a Higher National Diploma (HND) and Year 2 of a three-year UK Bachelor's degree

Course Requirements

Learners must meet at least one of the following entry requirements. Non-native English speakers must provide evidence of English language competency as per OTHM's English Language Expectations.

  • A relevant Level 3 Diploma qualification or equivalent, or GCE Advanced level in 2 subjects or equivalent

  • Mature learners (over 21) with relevant management experience must verify eligibility with the delivery centre prior to registration

Assessments

All units are internally assessed by the approved centre and externally verified by OTHM. The qualification is criterion referenced, based on the achievement of all specified learning outcomes. Learners must fulfil all learning outcomes and meet the standards specified by all assessment criteria to achieve a pass for each unit.

  • Written coursework assignments set by OTHM for each unit

  • Preparation of financial statements and accounting calculations where applicable

  • Presentations of 10 minutes duration for selected learning outcomes in specific units

  • Reflective logs for self-assessment of leadership and management capabilities

Progression

Successful completion provides learners with a wide range of academic and career progression opportunities. As this qualification is Ofqual regulated, learners may be eligible for direct entry into the final year of a three-year UK Bachelor's degree.
